What We Ordered

We tried three varieties of their Crossing the Bridge Noodles, featuring both the original soup and their tomato soup bases.

Each bowl comes out in a piping-hot stone pot, still steaming when it arrives at your table. The heat is crucial—it keeps the soup hot enough to cook your ingredients as you add them in. Be careful not to touch the bowl, though—it’s seriously hot.

Each order includes 12 carefully selected ingredients—from thinly sliced meats and vegetables to ham and the cutest little quail egg—all meant to complement the delicate broth and fresh noodles.

The tomato soup is our personal favourite; rich, tangy, and hearty. We order it every time—it’s one of those flavours that sticks with you.

Since we love their tomato soup so much, we also tried the Tomato Rice Noodle Soup with Beef Slices and Enoki Mushrooms. Instead of a stone bowl, this one arrives as a ready-to-eat noodle soup—no extra assembling needed. The portions are generous, especially with the slices of beef and heaps of enoki mushrooms. It’s one of the most filling and satisfying noodle bowls you can get for the price, and it’s quickly become one of my go-to orders here.

If you’re looking for an authentic and affordable dim sum experience in Richmond, Kam Tou Seafood Restaurant is your spot. We went there on a busy Sunday morning to try their dim sum and it was fully packed even early in the morning — always a good sign that locals love the place.

Kam Tou is known for serving traditional dim sum dishes made fresh daily, with portions that offer better value than most places in town.

Dimsum Highlights

Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) – Very fresh shrimp, crunchy to the bite, and one of the best we’ve had. Plus, Kam Tou gives you five pieces instead of the usual four, making it a great deal.

Siu Mai – Also comes in a set of five. Each piece is topped with black truffle, which adds a more premium flavour. Not personally my favourite since I’m not big on truffle, but many people love it.

Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice – Excellent texture. A lot of places make this too wet since it’s steamed, but Kam Tou gets it right — not too soft, not too dry.

Baked BBQ Pork Buns – A must-try. They feature a sweet, crispy crust on top (like a pineapple bun) with savoury BBQ pork filling inside. Perfect mix of sweet and savoury.

Deep-Fried Squid Tentacles – Perfectly seasoned and extra crispy. Great balance between crunch and chewiness.

Deep-Fried Prawn Balls – Light, airy, and crisp on the outside with juicy shrimp inside. These come served piping hot and have that satisfying crunch you expect from classic Cantonese dim sum.

Rice Noodle Roll with Beef & Watercress – Silky rice noodles wrapped around tender beef and fresh watercress. The rolls are smooth, not too thick, and soak up the soy-based sauce beautifully — a staple dish done right.

Chicken Feet – For those who love traditional dim sum flavours, Kam Tou’s chicken feet are well-braised and flavourful, with just the right amount of sweetness and spice in the sauce. The texture is soft and tender, perfect for fans of this Cantonese classic.

Tea & Dining Experience

If you’ve never been to a dim sum spot before, there’s usually a tea charge per person (that’s why “yum cha” literally means “tea drinking” in Cantonese).
At Kam Tou, the tea charge is $1.50 per person.

We ordered Tieguanyin (Iron Goddess) — a smooth, mild oolong tea that pairs well with dim sum. If you don’t know what tea to order, this one’s a safe choice.

If you’re looking for authentic Shanghainese food in Richmond at an excellent price, Baiyulan Restaurant should be on your list. Not only do they serve classics like soup dumplings and braised noodle soups, but they also offer lesser-known cold appetizers and generous portions that make dining here a real value.

What is Shanghainese Cuisine?

Shanghainese cuisine (Shanghai cuisine) is distinct from traditional Cantonese or Sichuan cooking. While Cantonese food often highlights freshness and lighter seasoning, and Sichuan food is famous for its spicy, numbing heat, Shanghainese food leans toward richer, slightly sweet flavors with soy sauce, wine, and braising techniques at its core. Dishes often include seafood, pork, and hearty noodles, as well as delicate appetizers.

Dish-by-Dish Review

Braised Chicken Noodle Soup
This is one of my personal favorites in Shanghainese cuisine, and Baiyulan makes it perfectly. The broth has a slightly creamy, almost milky quality that gives it a rich depth of flavor. Paired with tender chicken and chewy noodles, it’s comforting and satisfying—something I order every time.

Signature Shanghai Style Soup Dumplings
An absolute must-try. Be careful when biting into these, as the hot soup inside tends to spill out everywhere. The delicate skin and savory broth make these dumplings one of Baiyulan’s most popular items.

Ma Lan Tou
A cold appetizer made from finely chopped Kalimeris indica (a leafy green) mixed with dried tofu. It’s refreshing, aromatic, and a unique dish to try if you’re exploring Shanghainese cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with the lighter Shanghai Style Veggie Rice.

Shanghai Style Crispy Seafood Chow Mein
A true standout. The noodles are fried to a crisp base, then topped with a generous seafood stir-fry and savory sauce. The contrast between crunchy noodles and silky sauce is packed with wok hei (the smoky “breath of the wok”).

Beef Roll
Although beef rolls are more Taiwanese than Shanghainese, Baiyulan nails the execution. The flaky wrap and juicy beef filling, balanced with scallions, make this a crowd-pleaser. Steamed Buns
Soft, fluffy, and served with a side of condensed milk for dipping—simple but nostalgic, and a favourite for those who like sweet touches with their meal.

Pan Fried Pork Dumplings
Golden, crispy bottoms with a juicy pork filling inside. A classic Shanghai snack that complements the soup dumplings while offering a different texture.

Shanghai Style Veggie Rice
Light and slightly savory, it works perfectly alongside the Ma Lan Tou to balance out the stronger flavors of the meal.

Final Thoughts – The Best Shanghainese Food in Richmond?

Baiyulan is a fantastic spot for Shanghainese food in Richmond. With prices that are budget-friendly, portions that satisfy, and flavours that impress, this restaurant is perfect for both casual dinners and group outings.

For less than $90, four people were comfortably full. The creamy chicken noodle soup and soup dumplings are must-orders, but honestly, every dish we tried was a hit.

💡 Pro tip: Ask your server about their stamp card program. You’ll get a stamp for every certain amount you spend, and once you fill the card, you can redeem it for a free order of soup dumplings—a great bonus for regulars.

What We Tried

We went for the Half Poached Chicken and the Sweet & Sour Pork with Pineapple. Both were fantastic:

  • The poached chicken was juicy and tender, served with a classic ginger scallion dipping sauce. For the price, getting half a chicken as part of this set is an incredible deal.
  • The sweet and sour pork came in a generous portion, with lots of pineapple chunks (a personal favourite). The balance of crispy pork and tangy sauce hit the spot.
  • The Yangzhou fried rice was massive and cooked perfectly. Not too wet, just the right dry texture with plenty of “wok aroma” — exactly what you’d expect from a well-known restaurant like Kam Tou.

If you’re looking for an authentic Hong Kong café experience in Richmond, Peaches Café is a spot you won’t want to miss. Located on Alexandra Road (Eat Street), this bustling café offers a mix of classic dishes, baked specialties, and comforting flavours that keep locals coming back for more.

One standout for us was the baked basa fillet with spinach and cream sauce. The dish arrives bubbling hot, with a perfectly baked crunchy cheese topping that complements the creamy sauce and tender fish. It’s a slightly longer wait, but well worth it.

The fries that came with the steak combo were another highlight — extra crispy on the outside, perfectly seasoned, and reminiscent of the style you’d find at Costco.

For the steak combo itself, you can choose from a variety of proteins. We went with the fish and beef tongue, paired with a side of black pepper sauce. Beef tongue isn’t something I usually order, but since it’s not a common option at most Hong Kong cafés, I gave it a try — and it turned out to be surprisingly good.

Chocolate and iced lemon tea

Like any classic Hong Kong café, each meal comes with a complimentary drink, with cold options available for a small extra charge.

We went with an iced chocolate and an iced lemon tea. Both were enjoyable, though they could’ve used a bit more ice.

Atmosphere

Peaches Café captures the bustling vibe of a traditional Hong Kong eatery. During our Friday night visit, the café was packed — just what you’d expect on Eat Street. The interior is clean, decorated in pastel green tones with a playful “Lego-style” wall design. Seating is a mix of tables and booths, keeping with traditional Hong Kong café style.

Parking can be a little tricky depending on the time, but free parking is available if you’re patient.
