🍱 Affordable Eats at 88Kitchen Inside 88 Supermarket

Not everyone knows this, but hidden inside 88 Supermarket is a full kitchen called 88Kitchen. More than just a grocery stop, this takeaway-style spot serves a wide range of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese food — all at prices that are hard to beat in today’s economy. Whether you’re craving BBQ pork, banh mi, or sushi, 88Kitchen has something for everyone.

Chinese Food: Self-Select Combos & BBQ Favourites

One of the main draws at 88Kitchen is their Chinese rice combos. You can choose from 25+ different dishes, including favourites like sweet & sour pork, beef & broccoli, and string beans with eggplant. Pricing is refreshingly affordable:

  • 1 side + rice: $9.48
  • 2 sides + rice: $11.48
  • 3 sides + rice: $12.98

You can even upgrade your rice to fried rice or noodles for just 50¢ more. For comparison, similar combo-style restaurants like Dragon Bowl at Yaohan Centre charge closer to $15 for two items with fried rice, making 88Kitchen around 20% cheaper.

88Kitchen - Chinese BBQ Menu

In addition to hot table combos, 88Kitchen also serves Chinese BBQ:

  • BBQ Pork: $11.98/lb
  • Roasted Pork: $14.98/lb
  • Whole Roasted Pig: $298

Perfect for everything from a quick lunch box to catering a family party.

Vietnamese Favourites: Banh Mi & Salad Rolls at 88Kitchen

If you’re craving something lighter, 88Kitchen also makes Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches starting at $8.48 and salad rolls for $7.98. It’s a great grab-and-go option when you’re shopping at the supermarket and want something fresh without breaking the bank.

88Kitchen - Vietnamese Menu

Sushi & Japanese Options at 88Kitchen

Surprisingly, 88Kitchen also offers sushi — including rolls, combos, donburi bowls, and even full party trays. A standout deal is their Salmon Don for only $12.98.

They also stock prepackaged sushi near their sushi bar. If you swing by later in the evening, you might spot a 25% off sticker on certain packs. Plus, their weekly flyers often feature sushi roll specials at discounted prices — though these tend to sell out quickly thanks to the value.

Clean, Affordable & Convenient

One of the best parts about 88Kitchen is how clean and well-organized their kitchen is. With such affordable pricing, it’s refreshing to see quality maintained at a high level. And in today’s economy, their menu feels like a welcome relief compared to rising prices across the city.

88Kitchen currently has three locations across the Lower Mainland, with the Richmond branch inside 88 Supermarket being the one we visited.

Drama Hot Pot Set to Open at Garden City Plaza in Richmond

Richmond’s dining scene continues to grow, and the latest addition is Drama Hot Pot, a brand-new restaurant opening soon at Garden City Plaza. The space was formerly home to Mama’s Diner, which closed earlier this year, and will now transform into a vibrant spot for hot pot lovers.

📍 Location: Central at Garden City Plaza, beside Royal Beef and Pepper Lunch

What to Expect at Drama Hot Pot Richmond

While full details haven’t been released yet, the restaurant signage gives us a hint: bowls filled with noodles, veggies, and meats in broth-based, spice-coated formats. That signifies that Drama Hot Pot may be leaning into the increasingly popular customizable bowls with bold flavours and plenty of heat.

Another detail worth noting? The exterior décor and signage also showcase beer bottles, suggesting that Drama Hot Pot will likely serve alcohol alongside their meals. A cold drink paired with a spicy hot pot broth would definitely hit the spot.

Hot Pot Competition in Richmond

Drama Hot Pot isn’t the first to bring this style of dining to Richmond. Spots like Big Way, Piping Hot and most recently Deer One Hotpot (check out our full review) have already made a name for themselves with DIY hot pot experiences. Still, with a fresh name and prime location in Garden City Plaza, Drama Hot Pot will likely draw attention from foodies eager to see how it sets itself apart.

Coming Soon: Life is Drama, Pot is Hot

On August 24th, Drama Hot Pot shared a teaser on Instagram, hinting that the opening is just around the corner:

“LIFE IS DRAMA, POT IS HOT 🐉 Coming Soon 🐎 Richmond, BC”

With signage already up and an official announcement made, Richmond foodies can expect doors to open very soon.

More Variety for Garden City Plaza

The arrival of Drama Hot Pot adds yet another option to Garden City Plaza, which is already home to popular eateries like Happy Day Cafe and Good Bowl. With hot pot joining the mix, this Richmond plaza is becoming an even more diverse food destination.

👉 Stay tuned for updates on when Drama Hot Pot will officially open. We’ll be sure to cover the launch on our blog once more details are available.

Cherry’s Food House to Rebrand with Affordable Sichuan Eats

The Cherry’s Richmond rebrand is almost here — at least, according to insider sources. Word is that Cherry’s Food House will be reopening in just the next few days.

Previously known for its Korean–Chinese fusion classics like seafood pancake and tofu soup, Cherry’s Food House looks to be making a major shift. A sign reading 川菜館 (Sichuan Restaurant) has been spotted peeking out from underneath the old Cherry’s sign, strongly suggesting that the new concept will focus on Sichuan-style cuisine.

Insider sources also say that the refreshed Cherry’s Food House will prioritize affordable eats at around $10, served in paper takeout plates with disposable utensils. The setup will be fast-casual with no tipping required — a clear response to the growing popularity of Richmond’s food court dining scene, where low prices and quick service are attracting big crowds.

If true, this pivot would place Cherry’s Food House in line with a wider trend of restaurants rethinking their approach as they compete with the surge in food court popularity.

👉 Read the full backstory in our original Cherry’s Food House closing article.

The Cherry’s Richmond rebrand isn’t official yet, but if these insider reports prove accurate, Richmond locals may soon have a new go-to spot for budget-friendly Sichuan eats.

Whether you’re craving sushi, daily specials, or in-season recommendations from Chef Yuki and Eun, the updated system makes ordering fresh, delicious meals faster and easier than ever.

They shared a heartfelt message on their Instagram:

THANK YOU FOR AN INCREDIBLE FIRST YEAR~
Chef Yuki and I wish to express our utmost gratitude for supporting YUKI CAFE (Sushi & More) through our first year of business. We will continue working diligently to provide you with ‘Fresh & Delicious Food at a Reasonable Price’.

Takeout Only for the Remainder of the Year

Due to their small team and growing competition, Yuki Cafe (Sushi & More) will be takeout only until the end of the year. This allows Chef Yuki to focus on preparing each plate with the utmost care and attention. As they explain:

Since our opening on September 14th, 2024, a number of other Japanese restaurants have opened up nearby. For our small 2-person team, we want to focus on something different—providing each plate with more attention than ever before.

This shift doesn’t affect the quality or experience—their new online ordering system makes it easier than ever to get fresh, delicious sushi to-go, while supporting a local favourite.

How the Online Ordering System Works

The new online system is designed with convenience in mind:

  • Daily Recommendations: Chef Yuki and Eun provide fresh arrivals every week, highlighting the best seasonal and in-season sushi options. These daily recommendations are easily viewable online.
  • Category Selector: Quickly browse sushi rolls, sashimi, and other menu items using the new category filter.
  • Order Ahead: Beat the lunch rush or evening crowd by placing your order ahead of time for pick-up.

With this system, you can see what’s fresh, what’s in-season, and what’s recommended for the day—right at your fingertips.

Celebrate Yuki Cafe (Sushi & More)’s 1-Year Anniversary

Yuki Cafe (Sushi & More) is grateful for their loyal community and invites everyone to explore the new online ordering system. It’s the perfect way to enjoy fresh sushi, daily specials, and in-season recommendations—while keeping things convenient and safe with takeout.

While Pho37 is celebrating a new opening, another long-standing Richmond eatery has recently closed. Cherry’s Food House, a Chinese-Korean fusion spot that’s been serving locals since 2018, shut its doors this past weekend. Rumour has it they may be rebranding into a Sichuan restaurant.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the restaurant thanked guests for the memories, writing:

Cherry's Tofu House Instagram Message

A Richmond Favourite Since 2018 🍲

Since opening in 2018, Cherry’s Food House has been a staple for Chinese-Korean fusion eats in Richmond. Fans will remember their:

  • Seafood Pancake – an impressively thick, massive portion perfect for sharing
  • Signature Tofu Soup – hearty, comforting, and full of flavour
  • Other homestyle Korean-Chinese classics that kept diners coming back

Earlier this year, they shut down their Aberdeen Centre location, which has since been replaced by Luca Restaurant. Now, their final location is closing too.

What’s Next for Cherry’s Food House? 🌶✨

While it’s sad to see Cherry’s Food House go, the team hinted at a comeback, sharing that “something new and exciting is coming soon.”

Interestingly, a new sign reading “川菜館” (Sichuan Restaurant) has been spotted peeking out beneath the old Cherry’s Food House sign. This suggests that the next chapter could involve a shift toward Sichuan cuisine, which would be an exciting change for local foodies.

For now, you still have until September 14th to enjoy one last meal at Cherry’s Food House Richmond before the doors officially close.

Pho 37 Expands to Commercial Drive with New Location 🍜

East Van is about to get a taste of one of Metro Vancouver’s most beloved Vietnamese restaurants. Pho 37 has confirmed it will be opening a brand-new location on Commercial Drive, taking over the space formerly occupied by The Fish Counter at 1818 Commercial Dr.

The Fish Counter quietly closed its Commercial Drive shop at the end of June, leaving locals wondering what would move in. Now, signage on the storefront has revealed the answer: pho is coming to The Drive.

A Growing Vietnamese Staple in Metro Vancouver 🇻🇳

Pho 37 first opened its doors in Richmond’s Ironwood Plaza in 2014, before expanding to Union Square in 2018 and later to Robson Street in Vancouver. Today, the chain is known for serving up authentic Vietnamese comfort food in a casual, bustling setting — perfect for everything from quick lunches to family dinners.

Their menu covers all the classics, including:

  • Vietnamese Beef Carpaccio – thinly sliced beef, lightly seasoned and bursting with flavor.
  • Special Beef Noodle Soup – their signature pho with rich broth and tender beef cuts.
  • Charbroiled Lemongrass Pork Chop on Rice – perfectly grilled pork with a fragrant lemongrass marinade.
  • Vietnamese Sandwich (Banh Mi) – crispy baguette stuffed with savory fillings and fresh herbs.

In addition to strong word-of-mouth, Pho 37 has earned accolades like “Best Vietnamese” in the Richmond News A-List Awards and recognition as a finalist in the Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards.

What to Expect on The Drive 🌿

The new Commercial Drive spot will mark Pho 37’s fourth location in Metro Vancouver, and their second in the city of Vancouver. While official details like the exact opening date and menu updates are still under wraps, their website currently lists October 8, 2025 as the target opening day.

Judging by the space (similar in size to their Ironwood location), guests can expect Pho 37’s tried-and-true offerings: big bowls of steaming pho, hearty rice plates, and all the Vietnamese favourites the restaurant has become known for.

Goodbye Fish, Hello Pho 🐟➡🍜

The address may be the same, but the vibe will be completely different. Before Pho 37’s arrival, the space housed The Fish Counter (which continues to operate on Main Street and in North Vancouver) and, for more than a decade before that, The Cannibal Café. Now, The Drive is about to welcome a fresh chapter filled with the comforting aromas of broth, herbs, and noodles.

Pho 37 – Coming Soon

Stay tuned for updates on the grand opening — and in the meantime, you can satisfy your pho cravings at their Richmond or Robson Street locations.
