Richmond has a reputation for “cheap eats” being exclusive to food courts, but we just stumbled upon a new spot that’s breaking that rule.

We dropped by 110-8291 Westminster Hwy today and found Dao Field Noodle Shop (稻田粉面馆)—a brand-new concept that is bringing authentic Hunan flavours to the neighbourhood with a price tag far lower than you’d expect.

The $10 Price Point (Yes, Seriously)

In a city where a bowl of noodles is pushing $18-$22 these days, Dao Field’s pricing feels like a total throwback.

  • The $10 Tier: You can grab the Original Flavour Shredded Pork Noodle, Three Delicacies Noodle, or Hunan Zhajiang Noodles for just ten bucks.
  • The “Premium” Tier: Even the “expensive” items are affordable. The Stir-Fried Pork with Pickled Chilli is $12, and the Spicy Braised Beef Noodle Soup tops out at $15.

You also get to choose your texture:

  1. Hunan Flat Rice Noodles: Silky and perfect for soaking up the broth.
  2. Hunan Alkaline Noodles: Thinner, yellow wheat noodles with a signature springy snap.

Not Your Average Drink Menu

They’ve also put a surprising amount of effort into their drink game. Instead of just basic canned sodas, they have a lineup of specialty teas and coffees for $4–$5:

  • The Oolong Series: White Peach, Osmanthus, Camellia, and Jasmine Green Tea.
  • The Toppings: You can add Cheese Foam ($1), Matcha Foam ($1.50), or a Light Cream Top ($1).
  • Cold Brew: They even offer a Cold Brew coffee for $5.

More Than a Quick Lunch: The Interior

Don’t let the low price tag fool you—Dao Field isn’t your typical “in-and-out” joint. The interior is very intentional, featuring soft pink walls and unique lighting that resembles wheat stalks (a clever nod to their signature Hunan wheat noodles).

Whether you’re rolling with a group or flying solo, the layout has you covered:

  • The Solo Setup: They’ve got thin, wall-facing tables that are perfect for a quick, distraction-free lunch.
  • The Group Setup: They’ve also got tables good for larger parties.
  • The “Lifestyle” Corner: There’s a dedicated corner filled with curated bowls, mugs, plates, and more wheat-themed decor that gives the space a refined, boutique feel.

The DIY Sauce Bar

They’ve also set up a self-serve station where you can grab your own cutlery and, more importantly, customize your sauce and toppings. If the Hunan spice isn’t hitting hard enough for you, you can head over to the sauce bar and doctor up your bowl exactly how you like it.

The “New Richmond” Service Model

The shop follows the growing trend of semi-self-serve dining. You order at a kiosk, grab your seat, and head back to the counter when your number is called. This low-overhead style is likely how they’re keeping the prices at that magical $10 mark while still providing a sit-down environment.

The Verdict: We’ll be stopping by for a full taste test very soon to see if the flavour lives up to the value!
