I’ve been going to Thai Son since I was a kid, and somehow I only recently found out that they’re actually a franchise with multiple locations across Metro Vancouver. Honestly, I always assumed this was just a small mom-and-pop shop.
And to be fair, it really does feel that way. Their online presence is minimal — a simple website, no online ordering system, and no social media. It doesn’t really scream “multi-location chain.” If anything, it just reinforces the idea that a place can still feel like a hole-in-the-wall even if it technically has multiple branches.
But what keeps me coming back to Thai Son isn’t the nostalgia — it’s the pricing.
One of the Best Value Pho Bowls Around
Thai Son has always been competitive with their pricing. In fact, they’re usually a couple dollars cheaper than other pho spots.
My go-to order is the No. 11 Pho Tai Nam Gan Sach, which comes with:
- rare beef
- well-done brisket
- tendon
- tripe
- rice noodles in soup
A large bowl is just $15.95, while similar bowls at other pho chains are usually closer to $18.95. When I think of best value pho in Metro Vancouver, Thai Son is one of the first places that comes to mind.
If you can’t finish a large, you can get the small for $1 less, but honestly the size difference is pretty noticeable. The large is the better move.

Despite the lower price, they don’t sacrifice on quality:
- Tasty, balanced broth
- Generous noodles
- Plenty of toppings
- Bean sprouts served for the table
It’s simple, classic pho done well, and still one of the most affordable bowls around.
Com Tam Bi Suon Trung (Rice Plate)
We also ordered the Com Tam Bi Suon Trung for $16.95. This rice plate comes with:
- Pork chop
- Shredded pork skin
- Fried egg
- Rice and vegetables
- Side soup
This dish was packed with food. The pork chop was well-seasoned and tender, while the shredded pork skin added a nice texture and slight savoury richness. The sunny side up egg was perfectly runny, tying everything together.
The cold refreshing salad on the side helped balance the heavier meat, and the included bowl of soup is always a nice bonus.

Spring Rolls
Of course, no pho trip is complete without some spring rolls. We also got an order of 3 for $8.95. They were crispy, tasty, and straightforward. Nothing fancy, but a solid side to share.
Atmosphere & Parking
The Richmond location is located in a plaza with ample parking out front, making it easy to stop by.
Address:
4791 McClelland Rd, Richmond, BC V6X 0M6
The restaurant itself is very no-frills and casual, which fits the hole-in-the-wall vibe.
One important thing to note: they are cash only, which feels increasingly rare and very old-school.
Final Thoughts
Thai Son isn’t trying to be trendy or modern. No fancy branding, no heavy online presence, and no gimmicks — just solid Vietnamese comfort food at very competitive prices.
Between the generous pho portions, affordable pricing, and reliable rice plates, it’s easy to see why this spot has stayed popular for so long.
Best for:
- Cheap pho in Richmond
- Large portions
- Casual quick meals
- No-frills Vietnamese food
Would we come back?
Absolutely — especially for the No. 11 pho.
