Less than a month after we said goodbye to Little Karp, we already have a new tenant taking over that prime spot on Alexandra Road—and it’s a name that carries some serious weight.
We spotted the signature green lettering today: Cafe Gloucester is officially coming to Richmond.
From Cambie Street to Alexandra Road
If you’ve spent any time in Vancouver’s Fairview neighborhood, you know Cafe Gloucester (at Cambie and 17th). They are widely considered one of the “fancier” OGs of the Hong Kong Cafe world. While most HK cafes are known for being cramped and loud, the Vancouver Gloucester has always leaned into a slightly more “refined” diner vibe.

Seeing their sign go up at 8631 Alexandra Rd is a bold move. They are taking over a space that has seen a lot of turnover lately, and they are entering a Richmond market that is currently obsessed with “Budget HK Cafe” culture.
Can They Survive the “Food Court Pressure”?
This is the big question. Richmond’s HK cafe scene is currently a battlefield. We’ve seen the rise of One Cafe and Cha Don—stalls that offer massive portions for under $15, no tips, and zero pressure.
Even long-time neighbourhood legends like Kingspark Steakhouse recently folded under the pressure of this new wave. So, why does Cafe Gloucester think they can win?
Here is why they might have a chance:
- The “Fancier” Factor: Unlike the food court stalls, Gloucester usually offers a full-service experience. People who miss the sit-down comfort of a traditional HK cafe might flock here.
- The Menu Classics: If they bring their Cambie menu, expect some of the best Baked Pork Chop Rice and Mixed Grills in the city. Their Black Pepper sauce is legendary, and their Curry Beef Brisket is a staple for a reason.
- The Reputation: They survived the Canada Line construction years on Cambie—if you can survive that, you can survive anything.
What We Know So Far
Right now, the windows are still papered up and it looks like they are in the very early stages of renovation (if they’re doing much at all). Little Karp’s interior was already quite modern and sleek, so Gloucester might just be doing some cosmetic tweaks to fit their “Green and White” branding.

We don’t have an opening date yet, but if the food is anything like their Vancouver flagship, expect a menu that hits all the nostalgic notes: Hainanese Chicken Rice, Creamy Seafood Penne, and those thick, satisfying HK-style toast sets.
Check their full online menu if you want a sneak preview of what you can expect.
Is this the comeback of the “premium” HK Cafe, or will Richmond’s love for $15 food court meals be too much to handle? We’ll be watching this spot closely!
