If you’ve spent any time commuting in Vancouver lately, you’ve probably seen them: bright, glowing machines filled with stacks of fresh oranges, promising 100% natural juice in under a minute. There are currently 17 of these JusFres units scattered across the city, and we finally decided it was time to see if the “robot squeeze” is legit.

For this mission, we headed to one of the newest spots at Capstan Station in Richmond. A huge plus here is accessibility—unlike some stations where the machines are tucked behind the faregates (meaning you need to pay for transit just to get a drink), the JusFres at Capstan is located right outside the gates.

How the “Robot” Actually Works

The machine makes some bold claims: 100% freshly squeezed juice with no added sugar, water, or ice. At a flat $5.00 (tap-to-pay), it’s a pretty fair price for a “made-to-order” drink.

Once you pay, the machine gets to work. While the design is a bit more functional than theatrical—we’ll be honest, we wish the viewing windows were twice as big—you can still catch a glimpse of the internal “mini Ferris wheel.”

When you place an order, a row of oranges moves up and gets fed into a mini crusher. It uses two heavy-duty wheels to catch the oranges in the middle and squeeze every drop of juice out. JusFres claims to use 5 to 7 oranges per cup, which is a massive amount of fruit for five bucks, especially with grocery prices what they are lately.

The Taste Test: Is it Worth $5?

The juice comes in a 12–14 oz cup (our rough estimate) and includes a nice bit of pulp, which proves it’s the real deal. One thing we noticed was the temperature; even though it was a cold day, the drink itself was refreshingly chilled. This suggests there is a solid refrigeration mechanism inside keeping those oranges at the perfect temp.

The Verdict: The taste is 10/10—pure, tart, and super fresh. When you consider the price of oranges at the store right now, getting a freshly squeezed cup with no preservatives for $5 is a total no-brainer. It’s a high-quality “pick-me-up” that actually feels like a healthy win during a commute.
